Submissions are now open for entries to the Timber Design Awards for 2011, with a warm extended invitation to enter the Trans-Tasman Awards while you're at it.

The NZ Wood Timber Design Awards have showcased some pretty spectacular work over the last few years coming from our shores, which is encouraging not only for broadcasting the talented manipulation of our most abundant material, but reminding the greater world out there – particularly those places who we tend to admire for their innovation in timber design – that New Zealand has learnt a few tricks of our own, and are able (fantastically) to put them into play.

The Awards offer nine Categories:

Residential Architectural Excellence
Residential Engineering Excellence
Commercial Architectural Excellence
Commercial Engineering Excellence
Sustainability Award
Outdoor Infrastructure
Cladding Building Envelope
Interior Fit Out
(and the bonus) Clever Wood Solution Award.

The Trans-Tasman Awards, which you learn a bit more about here I think are worth throwing something at too, with last year's Community Award going to the deserving Waitomo Caves Visitors' Centre (picture below, peow!), which also won the Commercial Excellence Awards for both Architectural and Engineering categories. Way to intergrate!

Waitomo Caves Visitors' Centre, by Dunning Thornton engineers, Architecture Workshop, Hunter's Laminates and Hawkins Construction.

The Trans-Tasman competition awarded its Residential Category to the Burridge Read residence presented by architect David Boyle of David Boyle Architects (pictured below).  They know how to knock up a mighty fine interior too by the looks.

Go get it.

And I love a good sponsor, these fine groups are making the NZ Wood Timber Design Awards happen in 2011:
