Sodium bisulfate is an inorganic compound available as yellow powder and is highly soluble in water. Sodium bisulfate is produced as an intermediate in the Mannheim process, an industrial process involving neutralization of sulfuric acid by sodium chloride or sodium hydroxide. Sodium bisulfate is mixed with vinegar to form sodium dibisulfate, which work as flavoring agent in food preservation. It is also in the dairy and cheese industry as an emulsifier and preservative agent. Furthermore, sodium bisulfate is used as an additive in dried fruits and vegetables to control acidity. In such a way it prevents growth of food-spoiling bacteria. Which is why sodium bisulfate is widely used in food preservatives, especially in chips, meat and poultry.

In leather and metal finishing industries it is used as pickling agent. In addition, in the textiles industry, it is recurrently applied to velvet cloth made with a silk backing and a pile of cellulose-based fiber (rayon, cotton, hemp, etc.) to create "burnout velvet".
